Columbia City Parks Superintendent Sentenced for Embezzling $240K

Mark Green, the once-respected superintendent of Columbia City Parks and Recreation, found himself in hot water when his embezzlement scheme came to light. The city was left reeling as it was revealed that Green had managed to siphon off more than $240,000 from the city’s funds, all with the aim of fueling his baseball card obsession.

This tale of deception began to unravel when Columbia City Mayor Ryan Daniel raised alarm bells in March 2023 after detecting some questionable financial activities. An investigation swiftly ensued, pulling together a task force that included the Whitley County Prosecutor’s Office, Indiana State Police, and the Indiana State Board of Accounts. The probe’s conclusion was nothing short of shocking – Green had been using the city’s credit card to make extravagant purchases at ‘Sport Spot’ for high-end baseball cards.

The trail of deceit became even clearer when it was uncovered that Green had been reselling these ill-gotten cards on eBay, profiting from his deceitful actions. When confronted with the evidence, Green eventually came clean and admitted to his fraudulent behavior involving taxpayer money.

Initially facing a slew of serious charges including corrupt business influence, theft, and official misconduct, Green opted to strike a plea deal in April 2024. By pleading guilty to a single theft charge, Green managed to avoid the full force of the law, albeit with a hefty price tag attached. The terms of his plea agreement mandated that he pay back a grand total of $275,628, with a substantial sum going back to the city coffers.

The sentencing hearing marked the final chapter in Green’s downward spiral, as the court handed down a three-year sentence. The former parks superintendent was directed to serve the first year either behind bars or on a work release program, with the subsequent two years of probation hanging over his head. This stern punishment served as a stark reminder of the consequences awaiting those who choose to abuse the public’s trust for personal gain.

Beyond the individual ramifications for Green, this ordeal has shone a harsh spotlight on the inadequacies within Columbia City’s Parks and Recreation Department’s financial oversight. The glaring lack of checks and balances allowed Green to carry out his illicit activities unchecked, leading to a resounding call for tighter controls to prevent similar incidents in the future.

As Green begins his penance for his crimes, the residents of Columbia City can only hope that lessons have been learned and that measures will be put in place to safeguard against such flagrant abuses of power in the future.
