Robert Edward Auctions (REA) is starting off the year with a bang, presenting an extraordinary collection of baseball memorabilia that showcases over 180 years of sports history. This first auction of 2024 is nothing short of impressive, featuring nearly 3,700 lots that include some of the oldest and most unique items ever offered in the realm of sports collectibles.
One standout piece in this auction is a signed receipt from Alexander Cartwright dating back to 1842. Cartwright, a pioneer in the world of baseball, connects directly to the sport’s early history, making this item not only incredibly old but also historically significant.
Another rare gem from the 19th century is the 1888 N403 Yum Yum Tobacco John Clarkson “Throwing” card. Graded EX 5 and the sole PSA-graded example featuring the Hall of Fame pitcher and outfielder, this card is a true rarity that collectors would be thrilled to add to their collection.
Harry Wright, a prominent figure in the early days of baseball, is also represented in this auction with a personal scorecard. This one-of-a-kind item is from a June 22, 1883 game between Philadelphia and the Providence Grays, a team managed by Wright himself. The scorecard, scored in both pencil and blue ink, bears Wright’s signature and has been graded a 9 by PSA.
Leading off the auction is an SGC 1.5 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card, part of a vast array of Mantle items available. The auction also features over 250 autographed items from iconic baseball figures of the past, providing collectors with a wide selection to choose from.
Brian Dwyer, President of REA, expressed his excitement for this Encore Auction, noting that it is one of the company’s strongest offerings to date. He highlighted the diverse range of signed items and iconic cards in various grades, catering to collectors of all preferences.
Other notable pieces in REA’s January Auction include a 1914 E145 Cracker Jack #37 Grover Alexander SGC VG 3 card, a 1986 Topps Football #374 Steve Young Rookie SGC GEM MINT 10 card, a Babe Ruth cut signature, a 1938 Lou Gehrig signed postcard, a 1924 Walter Johnson signed album page, and a 1939 Honus Wagner signed Baseball Centennial First-Day Cover. The auction also includes three 1954 Topps #128 Hank Aaron rookie cards, a 1957 Topps Football #138 Johnny Unitas Rookie BVG NM-MT 8 card, and early Michael Jordan cards, among other desirable items.
Collectors will also be delighted to find signed checks from Jackie Robinson, Ty Cobb, and Roberto Clemente in the auction. Additionally, the T206 offerings are extensive, featuring over 720 options, including cards with rare advertising backs and those with rare Carolina Brights backs.
As is customary with REA’s Encore Auctions, all items start with a bid of $10. Bidding for this diverse and historically significant collection is now open on the company’s website and will run through January 21. This presents collectors and enthusiasts with a unique opportunity to own a piece of baseball history and rare memorabilia that will be cherished for years to come.
